Piercing Guidelines

Age Requirements
Patriots begins offering piercing services at age 8. Available piercings depend on the client's age.

All piercings require the young client's willingness, enthusiasm, and informed consent.

Parental Requirements for Minors
For all clients under 18:

  • A parent must be physically present throughout the procedure.

  • A parent must also be present for additional services, including jewelry changes and jewelry purchases.

  • The parent must bring a physical, state-issued photo ID.

The minor must provide at least one of the following:

  • Birth certificate

  • Military ID

  • Passport

  • School-issued ID accompanied by a birth certificate

If the parent and minor have different last names and addresses, guardianship papers or proof of custody must be provided.
Piercing Jewelry Requirements
All initial piercings are performed using implant-grade titanium (ASTM F-136) jewelry that has been sterilized in an autoclave.
Jewelry is selected by the piercer with input from the client to ensure proper fit during healing.
Outside jewelry is not accepted for initial piercings.
Anatomy Assessments
Many piercings depend on individual anatomy and may not be suitable for everyone.
Patriots' piercing team has almost 50 years of combined experience and evaluates each client's anatomy to determine whether a piercing has a high likelihood of healing successfully.
Your piercer may examine the area, ask questions, and discuss which piercings are or are not suitable for your anatomy.
Common anatomy-dependent piercings include:

  • Industrial

  • Septum

  • Daith

  • Forward Helix

  • Navel

  • Dermals

  • Vertical Lip/Labret

Patriots may decline a piercing if the piercer determines it is unlikely to heal successfully.
Healing and Jewelry Requirements

  • Keep your initial jewelry in throughout the entire healing process, until the piercing is completely mature.

  • Healing typically takes between 3 and 12 months and may take longer if issues occur.

  • Some piercings require jewelry downsizing to support proper healing and long-term comfort.

  • Your piercer will explain when downsizing is necessary and what signs to look for.

Re-Piercing Policy
If you lose a piercing, please wait a minimum of one month before getting the area re-pierced.
Jewelry Changes
Patriots offers jewelry-change services for piercings performed at the shop.

  • A change fee applies for inserting or removing one piercing.

  • When changing multiple piercings, the first is full price and each additional piercing is half price.

  • Piercings performed elsewhere, particularly amateur or poorly performed piercings, may not be suitable for jewelry changes.

  • Client-provided jewelry may be rejected due to poor metal quality, improper sizing, unsuitable styles, or concerns about piercing health.

All jewelry changes involving client-provided jewelry are at the piercer's discretion.

Piercing Aftercare Instructions
Proper aftercare is important throughout the healing process. Please follow these instructions provided by Patriots to help your piercing heal.
1. Leave Your Piercing Alone
Avoid unnecessary contact with your piercing.

  • Do not touch or play with your piercing.

  • Keep makeup, cotton swabs (Q-tips), and cotton balls away from the area.

  • Protect your piercing from unnecessary movement, bumps, and snags.

2. Clean Your Piercing Once a Day
Clean your piercing once a day while showering.

  • At the end of your shower, allow clean water to rinse each side of your piercing for 30 seconds.

  • Count out the full 30 seconds for each side.

  • Avoid additional cleaning products outside the recommended routine.

Optional Saline Cleaning
If your body responds well to saline solution, you may include it in your cleaning routine.

  • Only use sterile, pressurized isotonic saline, such as NeilMed.

  • Spray both sides of your piercing before showering.

  • Before finishing your shower, rinse each side with water for 30 seconds.

3. Understand the Normal Healing Process
During healing, it is common for piercings to experience:

  • Achiness or soreness

  • Itching

  • Crusting

  • Redness

  • Minor swelling

These symptoms may come and go throughout the healing process.
It is also common for piercings to go through periods of improvement followed by additional irritation before they are fully healed.
4. Do Not Pick at Crusties
Crusting is a natural part of the healing process.
Do not pick or forcibly remove crusties. They should naturally loosen and fall away during your regular shower-rinsing routine when ready.
5. Managing Irritation or Moisture Bumps
Some piercings may develop irritation or moisture bumps on one or both sides.
If this happens:

  • If you are not currently using saline: Add sterile saline to your routine. Spray both sides before showering and rinse thoroughly afterward.

  • If you are currently using saline: Try stopping saline use and cleaning with only shower water. This may indicate that your body does not respond well to saline.

6. Keep Your Piercing Dry
During hot and humid weather, gently pat your piercing dry after showering or swimming using a clean, dry paper towel.
If you are healing an ear piercing:

  • Sleep with dry hair.

  • Use a piercing pillow if you sleep on your side.

7. Keep Your Jewelry In
Keep good-quality, properly fitting jewelry in your piercing throughout the healing process.
Piercings can close very quickly when jewelry is removed, even during healing.
8. Return for Downsizing When Needed
Many piercings require jewelry downsizing to support proper healing and long-term comfort.
Your piercer will explain the appropriate timing and signs that downsizing is needed.
Patriots offers downsizing services for piercings performed at the shop for $20.
9. Contact Patriots With Any Concerns
Patriots is available to help with questions or concerns throughout your piercing's healing process.
